The inspiration for this painting came from a vision
of racing under the earth in the desert at night. In the lower part of the painting you
will notice images that look like they are "below" the ground. The artist was
under her friend's tipi and the top of the tipi formed an X. The fairy in the sky has her
arms outstretched in the form of an X, which is connected in and through the earth. The
painting is called "Above and Below" because the under earth energy is below and
through the fairy's outstretched arms and out into the heavens is above.
There are also many hidden creatures in the "below." On the
lower left is a wizard or gnome. Directly under the fairy in the center is a creature that
looks like a frog. The frog is a symbol for cleansing. Under the ground are images that
appear frightening, which represent our fears of the unknown. We can't see all of what's
under the ground because it is too dark and mysterious.
Above the ground is light. It is easier to see what is in the light, and
therefore, the light feels safer.
